GDPR and Data security: How Quickchannel ensures compliance

Viktor
Viktor Underwood, CEO at Quickchannel

In this blog post, we’ll discuss a topic that’s crucial for every company and organization – GDPR and regulatory compliance, and how we at Quickchannel ensure that all requirements are met, so you, as our customer, can feel confident and secure.

Simplifying GDPR compliance

We understand that GDPR can seem complex, and many people find navigating regulatory requirements overwhelming. At Quickchannel, we aim to simplify this process for you. By understanding the rules and, most importantly, how to comply with them, we ensure that we meet strict GDPR and data security standards transparently.

Who we are

Quickchannel was formed through the merger of Screen9 and Quickchannel in 2022. We have a long history of working with the public sector, including many large government agencies, regions, and municipalities in Sweden. Our video platform is delivered to customers with extremely high demands for data security and GDPR compliance.

How we work with GDPR

Transparency is a cornerstone of our approach. On our website, you’ll find all the information you need about our agreements, subcontractors, and how we handle GDPR, privacy, and cookies. We believe in making everything available and clear for our customers.

To meet different needs, we offer you two primary solutions:

  • EU Only: For customers who require that all data remains within Europe, we provide a solution where all data processing is handled within the EU and by European-owned providers.
  • Global: For global companies with worldwide operations, we offer a solution that utilizes global data centers and subcontractors.

What does this mean for you?

When you choose our EU Only solution, you can rest assured that your data is handled within EU borders and by European providers. We use our own data centers in Sweden and European subcontractors to ensure your data’s safety. If we ever need to involve a new subcontractor, we will only do so after receiving your approval.

For our global customers, we offer a Global solution that uses global data centers and CDN services, such as Amazon. This solution allows you to select subcontractors based on your needs, which is clearly outlined in our public agreements or Data Processing Agreement (DPA).

Examples of how we ensure GDPR compliance

One of the ways we ensure compliance is by having built our own Quickchannel CDN, giving us complete control over the entire supply chain within Europe.

For example, when we previously used an email service provider for product newsletters and it was acquired by a US company, we swiftly switched to a European provider to ensure continued GDPR compliance.

For large government clients with significant capacity needs, we use French-owned data centers located in France, Germany, and Poland. This ensures that the data remains within the EU and is managed by trusted European providers, fully compliant with GDPR.

Our AI features and GDPR compliance

We have also launched several AI features, such as our AI transcription tool, enabling automated subtitling for both live and on-demand content. These services are fully managed in-house without the need for external subcontractors, ensuring full control over data security and compliance.

For customers using our AI Creator, which leverages cloud-based services such as OpenAI, we are completely transparent about which subcontractors we work with. Before activating any services, we seek your approval to ensure data handling aligns with your compliance needs.

Preparing for future challenges

When it comes to GDPR and data protection, these concepts aren’t entirely new. GDPR is built on the EU’s Data Protection Directive from 1995, which is more commonly known in Sweden as the Personal Data Act.

Since then, we’ve seen several additions, including the ePrivacy Directive (also known as the ”Cookie Law”) from 2002. Initiatives like Safe Harbor (2000) and Privacy Shield (2016) provided an adequate level of protection for data transfers outside the EU, but these were invalidated by the SHREMS I and SHREMS II rulings.

The significant change came in 2018 with the introduction of GDPR, which tightened and clarified regulations further.

At Quickchannel, we stay updated on the latest legislation and agreements, and we’re ready to adapt to new regulations and any potential future rulings.

In summary

With Quickchannel, you get a provider that is both at the cutting edge of technology and takes data security seriously. Whether you choose our EU Only or Global solution, you can be confident that we handle your data safely and responsibly, always adhering to the current regulations and requirements.
